A Multigrid Algorithm for Immersed Interface

چکیده
SUMMARY Many physical problems involve interior interfaces across which the coeecients in the problem, the solution, its derivatives, the ux, or the source term may have jumps. These interior interfaces may or may not align with a underlying Cartesian grid. Zhilin Li, in his dissertation, showed how to discretize such elliptic problems using only a Cartesian grid and the known jump conditions to second order accuracy. In this paper, we describe how to apply the full multigrid algorithm in this context. In particular, the restriction, interpolation, and coarse grid problem will be described. Numerical results for several model problems are given to demonstrate that good rates can be obtained even when jumps in the coeecients are large and do not align with the grid.

An Adaptive Mesh Refinement Strategy for Immersed Boundary/Interface Methods.
An adaptive mesh refinement strategy is proposed in this paper for the Immersed Boundary and Immersed Interface methods for two-dimensional elliptic interface problems involving singular sources. The interface is represented by the zero level set of a Lipschitz function φ(x,y). Our adaptive mesh refinement is done within a small tube of |φ(x,y)|≤ δ with finer Cartesian meshes. The discrete line...
متن کاملSimulating FSI Problems via the Curvilinear Immersed Boundary Method: From Biofluids to Wind Turbines
In the curvilinear/immersed boundary (CURVIB) method developed by our group the background computational domain could be discretized with a curvilinear grid within which immersed bodies are treated as sharp-interface boundaries discretized with an unstructured triangular mesh (Fig. 1). The effect of moving immersed bodies is accounted for by reconstructing boundary conditions at the nodes in th...
متن کاملGeometric multigrid for an implicit-time immersed boundary method
The immersed boundary (IB) method is an approach to fluid-structure interaction that uses Lagrangian variables to describe the structure and Eulerian variables to describe the fluid. Explicit time stepping schemes for the IB method require solvers only for Eulerian equations, for which fast Cartesian grid solution methods are available. Such methods are relatively straightforward to develop and...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation of Parabolic Moving and Growing Interface Problems Using Small Mesh Deformation
In this work, we develop a cutting method for solving problems with moving and growing interfaces in 3D. This new method is able to resolve large displacement or deformation of immersed objects by combining the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian method with only small local mesh deformation defined on the reference domain, that is decomposed into the macro-elements. The linear system of algebraic eq...
متن کاملA multigrid method for a model of the implicit im- mersed boundary equations
Explicit time stepping schemes for the immersed boundary method require very small time steps in order to maintain stability. Solving the equations that arise from an implicit discretization is difficult. Recently, several different approaches have been proposed, but a complete understanding of this problem is still emerging. A multigrid method is developed and explored for solving the equation...
